This judgement is honestly unfair and untrue; nevertheless, there are many religious extremists in these countries but they don't speak for the population as a whole. This book would be able to open the minds of those close minded people across the United States about Iraqi and Iranian people. Reading this book, I realized that every country has its own internal struggles, and it is so unfair to judge these people because we have NEVER been in their situations.
I know that I couldn't imagine changing the way I looked, acted, dressed, and traveled all because my country says I should, and if I didnt, I could be arrested or even executed! It's so important to keep these things in mind while reading this book, because it has really opened my eyes to the life in Iran.
This book is now a movie, that I have actually seen, and is definitely worth seeing!
I'm also interested in this book, but I am not very far yet. I agree that we often think of Iran differently than we should. While Iran's history that is shared in this graphic novel can be confusing, since I don't know much about it at all, I think it does do a good job teaching us about Iran as a whole.
ReplyDeleteI really like this book as well. I've read one other graphic novel called Maus, which is awesome, but this one is just as good. I think it does a wonderful job in exposing us to the lives of Iranians, and it would definitely be a great read for those who think they understand Iran because in most cases, they probably don't.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with everything you said. It bothers me a lot when I hear or see things where people are making those judgements. Even in little things like high schools. There are people that judge others by the school that they go to. It isn't as serious of a topic of course but it just bothers me how judgemental people are about such things like that.
ReplyDeleteYou make a really good point about how Americans view Iranian people badly because of just a few religious extremists. It's awful how we sort of assume everyone in the country is like that because after reading this book, it's evident that that's not true. I didn't like the graphic novel format of the book, but I thought the content was very interesting. I liked learning a bit about Iranian culture because it was something I didn't know much about. I think Iran seems like a terrible place to live because of the oppressive government, and the book definitely opened my eyes. I feel more symapthetic towards the people now that I know about the suffering they face every day.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you--It's almost shameful how judgmental people are and how quick we create stereotypes. I agree how it's amazing the contrasting views people can get with simply a bit of knowledge. I ended up learning so much about this culture. I think it's cool how these people are proud of their culture and heritage despite the turmoil that is arising.
